Inflammation and Acidity (3)

Many of our customers ask us why we tout the anti-inflammatory benefits of the ingredients in our soups.  We want to take the time here to explain why anti-inflammatory foods are so important and the role of inflammation and acidity in our health.

As we explain in our book, The Soup Cleanse, one of the major causes of inflammation in the body is too much acidity in the system. Ideally, your body would rest at a perfect pH level between 7.365 and 7.4. That means that it’s not too acidic, and also not too alkaline (though it leans in that direction). The body is constantly looking to maintain that balance so it, and all your vital organs, can function at their peak ability. What we eat largely informs our body’s pH balance, though it’s also affected by factors such as stress, toxins, cigarettes, and drugs.

A diet is high in “pro-inflammatory” foods if it includes foods like alcohol, caffeine, soy, soda, white flour, gluten, grains, refined sugar, meat, cheese, dairy and processed food (which creates excess acid waste).  If this is a big part of your diet, then there’s a good chance that your body is too acidic.   We recommend checking your pH level. Most pharmacies carry strips for a simple urine test, or you can order them online on Amazon.  Research shows that a more acidic body is more prone to disease. You might see symptoms such as frequent flus and colds, digestive issues such as heartburn, acid reflux, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome; allergies; acne or eczema; joint pain; asthma; hormonal imbalance (especially less forgiving PMS); migraines or headaches and low energy;  low libido, or anxiety.  More serious symptoms include Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis; and cancer. What’s happening is that your body is using its precious energy to re-balance it’s pH levels and return to homeostasis instead of on nourishing and repairing the body.

On the other end of the spectrum are healing, alkaline (low-inflammatory) foods, which support the body in its overall health by helping it stay in balance.

These primarily include non-chemically grown leafy greens such as spinach, kale, collards, Swiss chard, and romaine, avocados, artichokes, asparagus, arugula, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, ginger, green beans, leeks, okra, onions, parsley, peas, pumpkin, squash, rutabaga, sprouts, turnips, watercress, zucchini, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, seaweeds such as kombu, hijiki, dulse, and wakame, wheatgrass, spirulina, almonds, lentils, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds, buckwheat groats, apples, bananas, coconuts, grapefruits, limes, lemons, figs, pomegranate, melons, grapes, pear, watermelon, peaches, oranges, garlic, honey, cinnamon, curry, sea salt, olive oil, and flaxseeds.  These plant-based ingredients are at the foundation of our soups.

Our cleanses are formulated so that you can counteract an over-acidic system, primarily through the soups and also through simple daily practices such as drinking our infused alkaline waters (more on alkalized waters in our next blog!) or plain water with a spritz of lemon juice (which is alkaline and healing), as well as breathing and exercising. These measures aren’t just healing, they’re also potent preventative medicine!
